McCombs (Univ of Texas) Shuns Big Tobacco Money

Submitted by lucas20 on Tue, 02/05/2008 - 14:58.

The McCombs School of Business said that it would no longer accept donations from the tobacco industry yesterday. The total sum garnered last year was not a ton, but still totaled $120,000. The move is not so bold as to stop the firms from recruiting at the school, but still represents a strong statement from a business school. "What it came down to for us was the ethical dimension," said George Gau, dean of the McCombs School of Business. "The leadership of the school felt that in some sense it was tainted money, that it is money gotten from a product that is significantly harming people." The University of California Board of Regents recently rejected such a proposal within its system.
