Santa Clara: We are a liberal arts institution with a business school
Such were the words of Jo-Anne Shibles in an announcement that the Santa Clara University will be cutting its undergraduate business school enrollment by 33 percent. Current students can still declare a business major or minor, but only through tax day.
This is terrible news for current Santa Clara business school students and alumni. The program has been growing steadily and will now be squashed. Worse off are Ms. Shibles terrible way of couching the announcement "We are a liberal arts institution with a business school." This easily could have been positioned as a quantity versus quality issue, as the undergrad newspaper attempts to do, but Ms. Shibles clearly missed that day of communications and PR training. This clearly comes off as a deemphasis on the business program. It would be no surprise if accepted students withdraw, current students transfer, and alumni throw their arms up in the air.
